COM3 guest lecture: On Monday 4.8. Prof. Enrico Formenti (Universite Nice Sophia Antipolis) gave a guest lecture titled " XOR flowers". The talk was given in room Pub 4, at 2:15pm.
Abstract: Additive flowers are a particular class of genetic regulation networks in which all local rules are linear functions of their variables and coefficients are taken over a finite field. This study aims at completely characterizing the dynamics of such networks. - BioHealth guest lecture: On Tuesday 19.8. Dr. Florian Block gave a guest lecture titled “Interaction Design”. The talk was given in Beta lecture hall, ICT House, at 14:15. Dr. Block got his PhD in Human Computer Interaction from Lancaster University, UK, and he is currently a Research Associate at Harvard, USA. His research interests lie at the intersection of human computer interaction, information visualization and the learning sciences. For the last four years, Dr. Block has been working on designing interactive multi-touch exhibits for playful learning (see https://lifeonearth.seas.harvard.edu/ for details).

HPY Research Foundation grants
HPY Research Foundation 2014 grants are open for applications. The foundation supports research studies of telecommunications technology, studies closely related to telecommunications business or the use of telecommunications.. Research studies should be in the areas of technological, economical or behavioural sciences and the level of post-graduate studies aiming to doctoral thesis or higher level studies.
The board of the Foundations selects the applicants who will be awarded and only the awarded applicants are notified by a letter later in the autumn.
Instructions for application:
Nokia Foundation Scholarship and Jorma Ollila Grant
The mission of the Nokia Foundation is to support the scientific development of information and telecommunications technologies and to promote the research education sector in Finland. Multidisciplinary research that bridges knowledge from other fields, like social, behavioral, business and services sciences, is highly valued.
Nokia Foundation has opened on the 20th of August the yearly application call for Nokia Scholarships, and in addition to that, the first application call for the new Jorma Ollila fund launched earlier this year. The Intention of the grants and targeted applicants are described as follows;
- Nokia Scholarship is intended to encourage efficient, fast-progressing postgraduate studies. Nokia Scholarships are granted for individuals pursuing a doctoral degree in information or telecommunications technology or in areas supporting the development of these branches of science. Scholarship can be granted for post-graduate studies in a Finnish university or to a Finnish applicant for post-graduate studies abroad. The scholarship can be granted at most twice to the same person.
- Jorma Ollila Grant is targeted towards recently graduated doctors to further develop their research career. The personal grants are awarded for gaining international experience for a period of 1-3 years. In addition to financial support, the new fund and Nokia Foundation will support the selected applicants through its contact network. The applications should comply with the charter of Nokia Foundation. In particular, the research should be in the areas of information and telecommunications technologies — including multidisciplinary research that bridges approaches from other fields, like social, behavioral, economics and service sciences, and support and promote education and research in Finland. Each year Nokia Foundation will select a few themes of special focus. For the first round we especially welcome proposals from the following three areas:
- Internet of things
- Big data
- Nano-technology
The application period for both grants will close on the 3rd of October, 2014 at 23:59 GMT+2. Please note that while postgraduate students may be familiar with the prized opportunity of the “traditional” Nokia Scholarships, this is first application call for the Jorma Ollila fund. Thus recently graduated doctors are not as well aware about this new opportunity, and we would appreciate if you would also spread the word about this this new Jorma Ollila grant to applicable recently graduated doctors.
Applicants may submit their applications (both Nokia Scholarship and Jorma Ollila grant) online at http://www.aspicore-asp.net/nokiafoundation/. This application tool makes it possible to register, create a draft application, and save and continue the application submission at later session. Application instructions are located within the tool and there is a section marked “need help?” for any specific questions regarding the application. Please note that referees of the applicant may submit their recommendation directly to the tool, but they are only able to do so after the applicant has submitted the application. Thus it is advisable to prepare the application with that requirement in mind, notwithstanding that referees will have one extra week after the deadline to submit their recommendation.
Please also note that Nokia Foundation Visiting Professor grants can be applied throughout the year, and the next deadline is also 3rd of October, 2014. More information about Nokia Foundation and all the Nokia Foundation Scholarships is available at www.nokiafoundation.com.
Väisälä Foundation grants
Väisälä Foundation grants are open for applications 15.8.–26.9.2014. The Finnish Academy of science and Letters grants scholarships annually for researchs in mathematics, physics, astronomy, geophysics and meteorology.
